Most debating unions are very old. Some
are 200+ years old and most are linked to universities and
colleges. However there are many vibrant unions all over the
country.
PoliticsUK wants to promote these fine
institutions and encourage their use and activity. We all
need to get more active in scrutinising your political
representatives. How better than learn the skills from
people in your local community.
If there happens to be no community near
you, you could join online communities or even start your
own. Below are all the details you need to join or start
your own debating societies.

Very interesting way to learn politics as it puts you
actually in charge of the cabinet.

The Debating Society is one of
the oldest at the University of Birmingham and one of the
best. It provides people the chance to challenge what they
know, develop their public speaking skills and meet like

UNIVERSITY: The Cambridge Union
Society is more than just a private members club. Whilst we
are proud of our status as one of the world's oldest and
most prestigious student debating societies, we are also
proud to be a registered charity. Our historic defence of
free speech and ongoing belief in participatory democracy
commits our members to promoting these values in the wider
community - particularly in schools, universities and in
local communities throughout UK and abroad. We therefore
organise and participate in domestic and international
debating events on a regular basis.

We are the University of
Southampton Debating Society, a club under the Southampton
University Students' Union (SUSU).
We debate. Basically what we do is pick an issue that we
are going to argue about, split ourselves into two groups
and each make a five minute speech for one side or the
other. Then we go to the pub. Easy? Of course. Anyone can do
it

The
Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with
an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests
and speakers to Oxford. It has been established for 189
years, aiming to promote debate and discussion not just in
Oxford University, but across the globe.
The Union is steeped in
history. It was founded in 1823 as a forum for discussion
and debate, at a time when the free exchange of ideas was a
notion foreign to the restrictive University authorities. It
soon became the only place for students to discuss political
topics whilst at Oxford. W.E. Gladstone, later to become one
of the greatest British Prime Minsiters, was one of the
leading figures of the Union's early years. Gladstone was
President of the Union in 1830, shortly before entering the
House of Commons. Many others have followed him into
politics, and the Union can boast dozens of former members
who have been active in its affairs whilst at Oxford and
then gone to become both nationally and internationally
prominent figures.
The
Central London Debating Society is for anyone with an active
interest in current affairs who would also like to improve
their public speaking skills. It's free to join and open to
all. Each debate is held in a central London pub where we
can gather for a few drinks afterwards. Moreover this
society is all about you, the members; whether you're a
veteran debater or just starting out and eager to learn,
it's you we want to hear from.
